Salisbury Steak

This is simply scrumptious!

Scrumptious recipe. I have tried several recipes, and this one is my favorite. I tweaked a recipe I found online to my tastes. It is so much easier to make than I had thought it would be. Now it ends up on our table more often than I ever thought it would.

With hamburger being the main ingredient, not only is it delicious, but it is very inexpensive to make for 6 people. I like to serve it with mashed potatoes and a vegetable, but it would also be great with wide noodles as a side.

Ingredients

Meat

1 ½ pounds of hamburger

½ cup bread crumbs

2 Teaspoons ketchup

2 Teaspoons dry mustard

1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

1 Tablespoon powdered beef stock

Salt and pepper

Butter and Olive Oil – about 1 Tablespoon each

Gravy

1 large Onion

1 15 ounce can of Beef broth

2 Teaspoons Ketchup

1 Teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet

1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

1 to 2 Tablespoons Cornstarch

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Directions for the meat portion

Mix the hamburger, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper in a bowl until combined. Make 6 patties either in a round or oval shape. Heat the butter and olive oil, and fry the meat until brown and no longer pink inside. Remove patties to a plate.

Directions for the gravy portion

Slice the onion in thin slices and add to the fry pan. Cook the onions until they are golden brown – will take several minutes. Add the beef stock, ketchup, Kitchen Bouquet, Worcestershire, salt and pepper, and continue cooking for a few miutes. Combine the cornstarch with a little water and add to the gravy until you get the right consistency. If the gravy is not thick enough, add a little more cornstarch and water. Stir and cook to make sure the cornstarch is cooked through. Add the patties back to the onions and gravy. Spoon the gravy over the meat and cook to heat through. Serve with mashed potatoes or noodles.
